Hair Transplant: FUE, FUT, Cost, Procedure & Recovery

How It Works · Technique Comparison · Medical Assessment · Hair Growth

Hair transplant surgery moves donor follicles to the hairline or thinning areas. Compare FUE, FUT and COMBO, candidacy, grafts, cost, recovery and expected growth.

Key points at a glance

Understand the harvesting method, candidacy and limitations before planning around your donor supply and pattern of hair loss.

How Hair Transplants Work

A finite supply of donor follicles is redistributed to areas needing restoration; surgery does not create new follicles.

FUE Individual Harvesting

A small punch releases follicles one by one. It usually avoids a FUT linear scar but may leave scattered dot scars.

FUT Strip Harvesting

A strip of donor scalp is removed and dissected under magnification. It may support higher graft needs but leaves a linear scar.

COMBO Planning

FUT and FUE can be combined when donor conditions support a higher-graft plan; it is not necessary or suitable for everyone.

Cost and Graft Count

Cost is influenced by technique, graft requirement, treatment area, donor conditions and surgical planning, so an examination is needed.

Results and Follow-up

New hair develops gradually, but transplantation does not stop native hair from thinning. Outcomes and future treatment vary by patient.

Who may be assessed?

Suitability depends on more than the area you want to improve. The doctor also assesses the diagnosis, donor area and likely long-term progression.

May be suitable for assessment

  • People considering restoration of the hairline, temples, crown or a stable local scar
  • Those with adequate donor density and calibre for the planned graft requirement
  • Those prepared to compare FUE, FUT and COMBO based on donor supply, graft needs and scar preference

May need treatment or observation first

  • Unclear diagnosis, rapidly progressing loss or active scalp inflammation
  • Insufficient safe donor supply or density expectations beyond the available follicles
  • Inability to follow washing, friction-avoidance and follow-up instructions

What is assessed before surgery?

A transplant redistributes a finite supply of follicles, so diagnosis, donor assessment and design all matter.

  1. 1

    Confirm the cause

Review the timeline, rate of loss, family history, scalp condition and previous treatment, and rule out causes not suited to immediate surgery.

  2. 2

    Measure safe donor supply

Assess occipital density, hair calibre, scalp condition and previous procedures to avoid overharvesting.

  3. 3

    Plan area and density

Balance facial proportions, natural direction, future loss and available follicles when prioritising coverage and graft distribution.

Recovery and growth timeline

These are general milestones. Follow the doctor's individual instructions for washing, work, exercise and follow-up.

  1. 1

    Days 1–3

The donor and recipient areas may be red, tight or mildly oozy. Avoid impact, rubbing and scratching.

  2. 2

    Days 4–10

Crusting gradually forms. Clean only as instructed and do not pick or remove scabs yourself.

  3. 3

    Weeks 2–8

Transplanted hair shafts may shed as they enter a resting phase; follow-up helps distinguish expected change from a concern.

  4. 4

    Months 3–12

New hair commonly emerges and thickens gradually while density, direction and native hair are monitored.

Risks and limitations

Every surgical hair restoration procedure has individual variation and risks that should be discussed during consultation.

  • Depending on technique, the donor area may develop dot or linear scars, reduced density, numbness or folliculitis
  • The recipient area may swell, crust or shed temporarily, with possible infection or uneven growth
  • A hair transplant does not stop native hair from thinning, so ongoing treatment or future density work may still be discussed

This page is for education and does not replace a medical consultation. Technique, graft count, cost, recovery and outcome vary by patient.

Benefits and Limitations of FUE Hair Transplant

項目 ✅ 優點 ⚠️ 缺點
Scarring No visible scar; tiny scattered dots suit short hair Donor area must be shaved; over-harvesting may reduce density
Recovery Small, scattered donor wounds may allow an earlier return to routine for some patients Improper aftercare may cause folliculitis or discomfort
Natural Look Hair direction and density customized for a natural result Requires high surgical skill; uneven placement affects outcome
Versatility Targets hairline, eyebrows, beard, and scar areas Improper local treatment can still affect appearance
Surgery Time Each graft handled precisely for maximum quality Long procedure (4–8 hrs); physically demanding for the surgeon
Cost Precision technique delivers stable, long-lasting results Higher cost; priced per graft based on quantity and difficulty

Hair Transplant Procedure

Step 1
1 STEP 1

Dr. Wu personally assesses the diagnosis, pattern of loss, donor supply and goals, then compares FUE, FUT and COMBO and estimates the graft requirement. There are no sales consultants.

Step 2
2 STEP 2

Dr. Wu performs a comprehensive pre-op evaluation based on age, facial proportions, available donor follicles, and projected future hair loss, then designs a natural hairline tailored to your head shape and estimates the required graft count.

Step 3
3 STEP 3

Under local anaesthesia, Dr. Wu and the nursing team harvest grafts using the planned FUE, FUT or COMBO approach, then implant them according to the natural direction, angle and density. Procedure time, discomfort and return to work vary.

Step 4
4 STEP 4

A follow-up visit the next day for scalp cleansing, wound inspection, and a full post-operative care briefing by professional nursing staff to ensure optimal follicle survival.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hair transplant?
A hair transplant moves follicular units from a donor area to the hairline, frontal scalp, crown or another area requiring restoration. It redistributes existing follicles rather than creating new ones.
What is the difference between FUE, FUT and COMBO?
FUE harvests follicles individually, FUT removes a donor strip for microscopic dissection, and COMBO uses both. They differ in harvesting method, scar pattern, graft planning and recovery.
How is hair transplant cost calculated?
Cost depends on the technique, graft requirement, restoration area, donor conditions and surgical complexity. An in-person assessment is needed for an individual plan and quotation.
When will I see hair transplant results?
New growth typically begins at 3–4 months, becomes noticeable at 6–9 months, and full results are visible at 12–18 months.
Who may be assessed for a hair transplant?
People seeking restoration of the hairline, temples, crown or a stable scar may be assessed when the diagnosis is clear, donor supply is adequate and general health permits surgery.
